The buildings which formed the center of the children’s community life were Jesup Hall which housed the chapel and elementary school, offices of the administrative and professional staff, medical and dental clinic, store, home economics room and carpentry shop; the William Hamilton Russell gymnasium; and the William Church Osborn cottage for resident staff.
The grounds included the August Heckscher Foundation all-purpose athletic field, a playground, a cook-out picnic area, and an outdoor swimming pool built in the spring of 1965.
There was also a brook for fishing, a pond for ice skating, roads for bicycles riding, and many acres of field and forest to delight and awaken the imagination of a child while providing him with the comfort and peace of natural surroundings.
Every child was expected to make a contribution to the community life as well as to the life in his cottage. Happy Valley endeavored to help each child find real place in the School community.
